Conservation Assistance Program (CAP)
The Conservation Assistance Program is a joint venture between the Gloucester County Soil Conservation District, New Jersey Department of Agriculture, and USDA-NRCS to promote the best management practices in agriculture. District CAP employees work side-by-side with USDA-NRCS employees to assist local farmers in conserving natural resources on their farms. The Gloucester Soil Conservation District provides agricultural technical assistance to landowners in Atlantic, Cape-May, Cumberland, Gloucester and Salem counties.
Both District CAP and USDA-NRCS employees are able to assist anyone interested in learning more about conserving our natural resources.
Soil Erosion and Sediment Control
One of the programs that the Gloucester Soil Conservation District administers is Chapter 251, P.L. 1975 the Soil Erosion and Sediment Control Act of New Jersey. This law is designed to minimize soil erosion and offsite sedimentation resulting from land disturbing and construction related activities throughout the State.
The Soil Erosion and Sediment Control Act requires, with few exceptions, that all proposed land disturbing activities in excess of 5,000 square feet, submit a soil erosion and sediment control plan to the District for review and approval. These land or soil disturbing activities would include single family and multi-family construction, industrial and commercial projects, demolition, construction of parking lots, public facilities, mining, quarrying and clearing/grading activities.
Under this law, the District is charges with the review, certification and subsequent compliance inspection of soil erosion and sediment control plans submitted for land disturbing activities. As part of the review process, the soil erosion and sediment control plans submitted to the District must be reviewed for their conformance with the New Jersey Standards for Soil Erosion and Sediment Control. Once approved, the District technical staff is responsible for the inspection of these projects to assure compliance with the certified Soil Erosion and Sediment Control Plans.
Regional Stormwater Management
The Gloucester Soil Conservation District along with Camden Soil Conservation District, Gloucester County Planning Division, and Rowan University have teamed together to develop Regional Stormwater Management Plans for Raccoon and Mantua Creeks. Over a three year period, the group will conduct field assessments, stakeholders meetings, watershed modeling and will prepare Regional Stormwater Management Plans (RSMP's) in consultation with New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection.
Conservation education is the key to preserving and protecting the environment in which we live. Gloucester County Soil Conservation District offers free educational presentations to schools, youth organizations and community groups on a limited basis. These presentations cover various conservation topics such as watersheds, soils, and backyard conservation. If you are interested in presentation, please contact Christina Christine, Educational Coordinator to set up an appointment.
